Q&A: Good places to order live fish/shrimp/snails online?

Question by Vash: Good places to order live fish/shrimp/snails online?
I live in a small town with no pet store nearby but walmart. Not only walmart has very limited selections of aquarium stuff, but also someone just told me not to buy from them because of poor fish care might get me sick fish.

Are there any good online aquarium stores selling live fish, shrimps, snails online?
I will not necessary not to buy from walmart, but I would love to have some additional species that they are not carrying…

I am looking for

Zebra Snails
Cherry shrimps
Bumblebee Shrimp
Guppies
Otocinclus

And I am also looking for a type or two tropical fish that could look like this big flat shape (not necessary this specie), but MUST be no more than 2.5″ full grown.

Suggestions please.

Suggestions for
1. Online pet store that delivers live fish with good reputation/price.
2. Type(s) of the fish I described in shape.
Also if you know any extremely awesome looking non aggressive tropical fish under 2.5″, please recommend.
Forgot to mention what I originally wanted to get and are available at local walmart

Q&A: What can live in a 5 1/2 gallon tank?

Question by captain2man: What can live in a 5 1/2 gallon tank?
I have a 5 1/2 gallon tank. I’ve always kept just small tropical fish in it…but it’s now empty and I’m interested in getting a reptile – lizard or snake or whatnot – to keep in it. I’m completely new to reptiles – have never had one before….so does anything exist that is relatively easy to take care of (i.e. good for a beginner) and can live a happy life in a small tank like the one I have?

I’m most interested in getting a snake – but not sure any type of snake could live in a tank this small over the course of its life.

Thanks!

What are some hardy fish that live long?

Question by michael jackson fan: What are some hardy fish that live long?
I want a list of tropical fish that are hardy and live long. I have a 10 gallon aquarium with heater and filter. Right now i have 5 guppies in there but they’re all dying. Their mouth turns white then they die. The second guppy has that right now and I have a feeling my other ones will get it soon. So, what type of fish can i put in there that will not die as soon as my neons and guppies? I’m thinking about getting a betta but i don’t want it to be in there by himself.

Could a Paradise Fish and a Bristlenose Catfish live together in a 10 gal and other questions?

Question by Taronblade: Could a Paradise Fish and a Bristlenose Catfish live together in a 10 gal and other questions?
Basically, long term could it work and the fish be fine? I would love a why or why not. Also, if it’s a stupid question, I would like to apologize ahead of time, I know its an odd set up with a lot of potential problems. I’m relatively new to the hobby but want soemthign a little different. If it helps any I have a 20 gal biowheel filter and plan on doing thinds right with some fishless cycling for the first time (I’m learning at least). I want to upgrade my tank size, but a 10 gal is all I’ll probably have for a while. I have seen or heard of some odd tanks work out pretty good (like guppies in a saltwater tank and certain brackish fish living fine in freshwater). If you think it would be possible to make the 2 fish comfortable, what other potential problems could I expect to run into? I know there will likely be many, but I’m really hoping there might be ways to get around these. I’m really not expecting to get many yes’s, but I can only ask and see right?

As for other questions, what are some good reading books you would suggest for the hobby (I was already planning on getting the For Dummies take on fishkeeping) and what other good online guides and websites could I find out there that I may have missed (links much appreciated). Also, I already have a guide on fishless cycling, but any extra tips would be awesome! :D
@Stella, HEY AGAIN! I think I can pull it off. My biggest problem is figuring out the proper temperature. I know they can both survive at a variety of temps, but Plecos tend to be in heated tanks while Paradise are kept colder. I’m sure I can find a happy medium, but I’m having problems finding that medium. As for plants I already have a good idea what it would look like and I’m also thinking of adding bamboo and temple style decorations. But we’ll see.

you again eh?It sounds like a more exotic version of the betta cory combo, lots of people are successful with that. You’d have to make sure you have driftwood for the BN and a place for him to go if the paradise fish gets finicky with him.

Here’s a forum about a BN and a betta

http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/pleco-plecostomus/21618-bristle-nose-pleco.html

http://www.fishlore.com/ is my favorite forum

you might want to check out http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/ too, they have lots of oddball fish.

If you get into plants at all (I vote you at least throw some java moss on your driftwood :D ) this site is my favorite http://www.plantedtank.net/

I’m not too big on fishkeeping books, you can find just about everything in them on the internet, and you don’t even have to pay for the info.

If you’re still thinking about crayfish too you should look at the mexican dwarf orange crayfish, they’re little bitty guys. http://www.shrimp-n-it.com/invertebrates/mexicanorange.shtml

I think i’d be hard to find real ones too look at though, they’re not very common

edit: they both do well between 60-80 paradise fish are kept on their own a lot and don’t really need heaters so people don’t buy them, a heater certainly wouldn’t hurt. I would check the temp of your tank while it’s cycling, if it stays in the low 70′s or so I don’t think I’d even bother with a heater if I were you

just remember to add some driftwood to your temple :P

Oh gosh, there are an endless amounts of things you could do with a ten gallon, that’s what makes it fun! First decied if you want real or fake plants. Real plants can be done very easily if you choose the right plants. Java ferns, java moss, anubias, are all good easy choices. Now as far as fish are concerned, it sounds like you would like some bight colors moving around in your tank. Here are some web sites that have reccomended stocking ideas for a ten gallon. Try and go through and look up each fish and see what it needs to live a healthy life. Here are those sites:

What tropical aquarium fish can live with danios?

Question by Anodos: What tropical aquarium fish can live with danios?
I have a single long-finned leopard danio and over the past year or so I’ve added all kinds of fish–platies, cardinal tetras, guppies, etc. and the danio all. The only fish it hasn’t killed is a catfish (presumably, because the catfish is considerably larger than it).

My latest edition is a rainbow shark and since I added him, the danio has returned to his all too familiar routine of biting fins. I fear it’s only a matter of time before the shark passes away.

Any suggestions on fish that can live with danios, or shall I just return the bully to the local petstore (which would probably mean his )?

Best answer:

Answer by bleedseahawkblue
Danios are a shoaling fish and need groups of 6 or more. Since you only have 1, that explains perfectly why it is so aggressive. It is very typical for singular danios to act this way. Get him 5 buddies and he should calm down.

Q&A: Walmart Live NightCrawlers, Is it okay to feed to tropical aquarium fish ?

Question by Altair_Gimmik: Walmart Live NightCrawlers, Is it okay to feed to tropical aquarium fish ?
I usually buy nightcrawlers when I go fishing and they look scrumcious and fat and had a thought. I read online that my “creature” requires nightcrawlers/worms in there daily diet. I was wondering if anyone feeds there fish/toads/newts/salamanders ect. live worms purchased from walmart. Just wondering if it would be safe to feed to my aquarium buddies without getting parasites. Are they farm Raised ?

Best answer:

Answer by Grand Master BasserĀ®
Yes, the nightcrawlers, red worms, and meal worms that you buy from Wal-Mart are prefectly safe for pets to eat. The worms are farmed-raised in Canada, hence the “Canadian Jumbo Nightcrawlers” on the little tub.
