Successfully Start a Tropical Freshwater Fish Aquarium With Knowledge

How do you start anything or do anything without knowledge? Beats me. Common sense isn’t it? Everything you do needs knowledge but some folk get on with something without it and then wonder where it all went wrong. When you start a tropical freshwater fish aquarium you need knowledge. Don’t try without it.

Hey I ain’t no psychic but I can tell you that if you start a fish aquarium with zero knowledge then it will last a week and you’ll be calling fish enthusiasts all the rotten names you can think of. But all the time it will be your fault, no one else’s.

You can’t expect to look after a few fish in a visually stunning aquarium if you know nothing about it. Will you treat the water? Did you know it had to be treated? Will you choose fish which will eat each other? Did you know some fish actually eat each other? Will you treat the algae? Did you know algae would build up in the tank? Did you know what algae is?

Ok you get the message.

But it doesn’t have to be that way and don’t try ‘cos you will fail. Get the knowledge first before you do anything because you need it for success. And listen, it only takes a few hours, not weeks on end studying, studying and studying, and as you dig into your research you’ll be amazed at the information anyway, so boring it is not.

Where can you get that information? Books, magazines, libraries and the good old internet. There are lots of websites with good information to help you start. Yes there are some which blatantly try to sell you stuff and there are others which simply contain information and nothing else. Starting a freshwater fish aquarium is just so much fun and will give you pleasure for life – if you start with knowledge.

Starting a Tropical Freshwater Fish Aquarium, and Pet Shop Assistants

Hopefully you realize the utter importance of research prior to starting a tropical freshwater fish aquarium. No research means no success so it is mandatory, and while the internet and book research is the obvious place to start, don’t under estimate the pet shop assistants. They know quite a bit more than you might think.

When folk first get the idea that a fish aquarium may be just the sort of hobby they were looking for they usually haven’t thought about how exactly to make a start and what maintenance is involved throughout the life of the fish. The internet and books are indeed the first place most of us would carry out our research, myself included, but lots of folk have this idea that pet shop assistants don’t know that much at all.

Folks, let me tell you, that just isn’t true. The owners of most businesses want their customers properly informed of all products, maintenance and best practice.

You’ll notice in a lot of pet stores that fish tanks normally take up all the wall space, in other words there are lots of them. Why? Because they’re very popular.

Now that being the case, the assistants need to know the ins and outs of how to start a freshwater fish aquarium and how to then maintain that aquarium. You’ll be very surprised at how much knowledge they have and therefore how they can be a huge advantage to making your new hobby a success for life.

So listen up folks. Use the internet, books and magazines as most, if not all of us do, but don’t forget the pet shop assistants. By the way I am not one, but I do have lots of praise for their knowledge in the hobby of starting a freshwater fish aquarium and keeping it for life.

Don’t be afraid to approach them for help that’s what they’re there for. So go on, use the internet and books but get that person to person information as well. You won’t go far wrong that’s for sure.

Starting a Tropical Freshwater Fish Aquarium With Success

Some hobbies need almost nothing to start and not much more to continue, like for example Origami. What do you need? You and paper, that’s about it. But when you’re starting a tropical freshwater fish aquarium you do need a tank, fish, accessories, and, most importantly, research prior to starting.

If you think you can start a freshwater fish aquarium by chucking some water into a tank with a few fish and a filter thingy then think again ‘cos that ain’t how it’s done folks.

What size tank will you get? Will it fit into the available space in your house? What do you do to the water before fish can live in it? Can you get a mixture of fish species or will some eat each other? Can you use real plants or will the fish eat those as well? How do you treat algae before it treats the fish?

You really need to research the subject before doing absolutely anything, this is crucial as without it you will certainly fail after a very short time.

If you think the word “research” sounds a bit heavy then it’s time for a re-think. Research is simply reading up on a subject, and in the case of fish aquariums it’s really interesting, you’ll be amazed at the information out there. It doesn’t take long and besides you’ll really enjoy it, honestly you will.

So come on folks don’t let lack of information stop you entering one of the most enjoyable, rewarding and interesting hobbies out there. Get that information and you can start a freshwater fish aquarium in no time and without wasting time and money. Do it right and you’ll have a superb and stunning fish aquarium for life.

Q&A: How important is the alkalinity level in a freshwater aquarium with tropical fish?

Question by Tessa Starr: How important is the alkalinity level in a freshwater aquarium with tropical fish?
My alkalinity level is low (about 20-40 ppm)
Not sure if that’s okay or not =/
Do I need to buy something to raise the level?

And btw I’m just cycling right now, so there’s no fish yet.

Answer by Ghapy
That’s fine – just enough to keep the water stable.

Tropical fish are very tolerant of things like kh, gh, and ph, and messing with it is not worthwhile most of the time. Profiles of fish often show a ph – this is an estimation of the ph in their wild habitat. They are more tolerant of this though, and most of our fish are bred in captivity anyway.

I want to start a freshwater aquarium soon, someone want to help me decide what fish to get?

Question by Becca K: I want to start a freshwater aquarium soon, someone want to help me decide what fish to get?
So I have a small tank, it’s just 10 gallons. Well I think it’s 10 gallons, the measurements are 20″ long 12″ high 10″ wide. I’m mostly starting an aquarium just because I want something interesting in my room, but don’t let that be a warning sign, I’m 17 and I am dedicated to taking care of this tank 100%. I won’t just leave it there to die, don’t worry! I really love aquatic life. Anyways!….I’d like to have a few different types of fish in there. Obviously they can’t be large. So what would be a good choice? I know some fish can be aggressive towards others so I want to make sure I pick a few that will cohabitate well.

I prefer tropical fish, or at least just bright colored fish.

Also should I get a small algae eater? I think plecos would get too big for my small tank but what else could I use? I read about something called an Oto catfish they are small but I don’t know much about them. All advice is appreciated :)
Oh and should I get a dwarf frog? I think they are cool and was thinking about it for my tank, good idea or no?
DDC your tank is BEAUTIFUL! Lol I want it, thanks those fish sound perfect

Guppy’s can go in the 10 gallon, as well some Molly’s or Platty, colorful fish that dont grow large, you can get 6 Neon tetra’s to school around your tank, they are fun, or some stripped danio’s.

Gourami’s are cool and colorful and mellow, mine never ever attack other fish.

Dwarfs are boring, they just hide alot.

You can toss some Ghost shrimp, they are kinda cool to try to find them its like Wheres Waldo.

make sure you Cycle your tank, add water conditioner, have a filter, and water heater ( is a plus ) but cycle and conditioner are important, keep ur fish in 72-82 degree water.

Good luck :D

Tropical Fish -Freshwater

The following have been tankmates for the last 4 years. Before that, I picked up the Angel and Gold Algae Eater at a Pet Store. They were raised together as babies and their former owner could not take care of them any longer. I purchased the Angel for .00 and the lady at the shop threw in the Gold Algae Eater because he was roughing up the other fish in the tank (Parrot Cichlids). This is the first time in 30 yrs I’ve seen a full grown Algae Eater get along with a full grown Angelfish. Never had a fight. However, I would not recommend keeping those two types of fish together in any aquarium setting. I believe since they were raised together, they are used to each other. I still monitor their relationship from time to time though. btw…I only keep these three in this aquarium. It’s too small for a larger community tank and just right for these guys. I’ve always had great luck with former tanks that I’ve had because I don’t overload them with new fish. If you want a successful community aquarium. Purchase your fish together at the beginning (prefer juvenile fish) and when some do die off, don’t replace unless you have another aquarium set up as your holding tank. Otherwise, you risk transmitting diseases to your older fish population. Gyrinocheilus aymonieri-Gold Algae Eater Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps -Sail Fin Plecostomus Pterophyllum scalare- Marble Veil Angelfish

We’ve been lucky enough to acquire a breeding group of Ivanacara Adoketa (formerly Nannocara Adoketa) from a local breeder. We are keeping them in soft water with a pH of 6. By having peat balls in the water, we can keep it sweet. At present they are in with XL cory Julii. All our fish (except these ones) are available for next day delivery. To make an order or to check immediate stock, please phone the shop on 01661 844 005. 30 gal tank freshwater tropical tank, stocking with 5 danios…compatiability with other types of fish?

Question by kisses come in fives: 30 gal tank freshwater tropical tank, stocking with 5 danios…compatiability with other types of fish?
we have 5 short-finned zebra danios that are moving from a 10 gal into a 30 gal (each between 1.5″ and 2″ long including tail; ranging in ages from 3 to 5 years old-so considering that the average lifespan for a danio is 5 to 6 years some of them might not be around much longer)
we’d like to make the 30 gal into a community tank rather than keeping it a species tank
fish that I like include non-aggressive tetra varities and fancy male guppies
fish that my room mate likes are various small sharks and upside down catfish
we do NOT expect to have room for all the above species/breeds of fish that we are interested in
however
we were wondering which of the above species/breeds of fish could live peacefully together in a 30 gal?
any tips on care for the fish we are interested in:
non-aggressive varieties of tetras
fancy male guppies
small freshwater shark varities
upside down catfish
any general tips on our new 30 gal freshwater community tank?
(stocking, compatiability, etc.)
thanks in advance for any tips or general advice you may have to offer on the subject :)
