Q&A: How important is the alkalinity level in a freshwater aquarium with tropical fish?
Question by Tessa Starr: How important is the alkalinity level in a freshwater aquarium with tropical fish?
My alkalinity level is low (about 20-40 ppm)
Not sure if that’s okay or not =/
Do I need to buy something to raise the level?
And btw I’m just cycling right now, so there’s no fish yet.

That’s fine – just enough to keep the water stable.
Tropical fish are very tolerant of things like kh, gh, and ph, and messing with it is not worthwhile most of the time. Profiles of fish often show a ph – this is an estimation of the ph in their wild habitat. They are more tolerant of this though, and most of our fish are bred in captivity anyway.

Without more detail such as the size and nature of filtration, it will be hard to fully answer this question.
In general, you have many ways to go with a tropical tank.
You could go with a livebearer tank. This would be your guppies, mollies, swordtails, etc. These are colorful, and generally hardy fish that do well. They like a bit of aquarium salt added, and they are easy to breed and give birth to live young.
You could go with a community tank. This is a general term, but often a community tank has a variety of species, liek Tetras, bottom dwellers like catfish, and others. It can be very diverse, but you need to plan for how large the fish actually will get. For example, some fish like the tin foil babrb are sold small but can get over 8 inches long.
You could focus and have a habitat tank or a species tank. For example, a tank dedicated to African cichlids, or a tank dedicated to Discus or Angelfish.
I suggest you check out your local library and look for some ‘aquarium encyclopedias’ TFH (Tropical Fish hobbyist) published some good ones. Also check out websites like www.pethobbyist.com and www.aqualink.com for more details.

You should test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate weekly or bi-weekly. Optional test kits are pH, hardness, chlorine, and phosphate. Most pet stores should have these test kits, and they shouldn’t be too expensive.
You should do 25% water changes weekly. Here’s a link on how to do a water change: http://www.fishlesscycling.com/articles/how_to_do_a_partial_water_change.html

Q&A: What all do I need for a tropical fish tank?
Question by Chris: What all do I need for a tropical fish tank?
All I have is the tank, and light right now. What all do I need to keep the fish alive? If I am going to spend money on something I do not want them to die in less than a month. Do I need a special tank? Do some fish require different things to live?
Its a 55 gallon fish tank.

- Heater
- Gravel
- Filter
- Ornaments
- Plants
- Net to catch your fish
- Liquid plant fertilizer (for real plants)
If you want your fish to live for more than 1 month you need to properly cycle your tank. Read up on Nitrogen Cycle.
