Q&A: Do I have to now clean out my old goldfish tank entirely before adding new fish?

Question by Orla: Do I have to now clean out my old goldfish tank entirely before adding new fish?
I have recently purchased a new fish tank slightly bigger than my old 95l. I have my moved my goldfish into this new tank & have decided that I would like to give keeping tropical fish a go. However my old fish tank is still full of water, filter on, heater installed etc etc. Would I have to clean out this old fish tank and start over before adding tropical fish, or would they be okay going into this older tank if I did a slight water change?
I haven’t been using a heater for my goldfish, I only just installed it this week to heat the water for the tropical fish I intend on keeping :) I’ll definately research before I buy any tropical fish.

A 50% water change should be fine, you want to keep the tank cycled after all. If you take out all the water you’d have to cycle it again before you get new fish.

Crayfish can live for over three years
In the UK, it is illegal to keep certain species of coldwater crayfish, as there is a fear they could outcompete native animals if released into the wild. They are keen hunters and should be stored in a fish tank by themselves, as they will quickly eat

There was a time when house plants more or less stopped growing in the winter and in old gardening books they sometimes talked about resting plants in the winter by almost drying out the compost. That was in the days when houses didn’t have such efficient heating, but with modern day central heating house plants will carry on growing through the winter, albeit a bit slower. Because of this house plants should be checked fairly regularly to keep them in good condition. Gardening Expert Martin Fish explains how.

How do i keep my beta fish’s tank clean?

Question by donut4973: How do i keep my beta fish’s tank clean?
Within a day, the water gets murky and stays murky until i clean it again. I would so much rather have a crystal clear water or as clear as possible than murky water. at the moment i have 3 ghost shrimp, 1 beta, and 1 live plant. I feed my beta TetraMin tropical granules once a day. i am open to any possible suggestions in keeping the water clear.
I believe it is 1-1.5 gallons. not really sure because it has been around for awhile.
i have an air stone
i am also changing the water between 4-7 days depending on how dirty it is.

What size tank do you have? What kind of filtration? You may be overfeeding.

How often and how much to feed fish, clean tank and filter and keep light on.?

Question by jeffrey: How often and how much to feed fish, clean tank and filter and keep light on.?
My 75 gallon aquarium has about 80 fresh water tropical fish consisiting of cardinal, rummynose, rainbow, gold and congo tetras. It also consists of an assortment of platys. I also have cory and bristle nose catfish. How much , how often and what time of day do I feed them which consists of flake food and frozen blood worms? How often do I clean my Acquaclear 110 filter and do a 30% water change? How long do I keep the fluorescent light on? I have only plastic plants and want to keep the algae down on these plants. I was keeping the light on 11 hours a day and therefore cleaning the plants every 2-3 weeks which is getting to be a pain/ The filter gets pretty dirty and I was cleaning it every week now due to so many fish. Is once a week ok or do I need more often to do it? I will thank you for your replies.

Feed your fish once or twice per day, just a few bites, not all that they can eat because they will eat more then is good for them. It doesn’t matter what time, do it to your schedule and when you have time to do it properly and not just dump food in.

Do the water change every week to keep things in good shape, and vacuum the gravel while you do it to keep waste from building up too much. SInce your tank is overstocked it would be a good idea to use a nitrate tester to make sure the tank is not declining each week. If your water changes can’t keep them in check, it’s time to thin out the population.

Monthly is a good routine for the filter. If you have to do it every week then it sounds like you don’t have enough filtration and might want to get a good sponge filter to help out – they are really great for small fish. Just rinse the media out in discarded water from your water change. In the mean time you need to keep the filter running free, but be careful because you don’t want to overclean the filter for risk of killing off too much bacteria.

Keep the light on just 6 hours per day or so. TImers are cheap and I would recommend getting one and setting for a time period where you are home to njoy the tank. If you are hanging around the house on the weekend or something and want the light on a little longer, it won’t do any harm to do so.

Keep in mind algae will always grow and will always need to be cleaned off occasionally, but proper feeding and care and limiting light can help minimize it. By overstocking you are also asking for more algae because its food builds up faster.

Tank of 6 tropical fish.. Can’t seem to keep the water clean?

Question by Lindsey: Tank of 6 tropical fish.. Can’t seem to keep the water clean?
I have to clean the tank almost weekly. The water turns so green. I put the water purifiers in, the chemical to make the water less foggy. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong!

How big is the fish tank? Does it have a filter? When you clean it out, what are you doing, exactly? Have you tested the water?

Give us some more information, please :)

How big is your tank? Is your ammonia level ok? take a sample of your water to the pet store and have them test it.
