You don’t use sand in an aquarium, you use gravel.

Trying to find a home for some aquariums I have in storage that would benefit unwanted tropical fish instead of creating more.

You could sell it to other people like on craigslist.org or give it to your local fish store

Q&A: what are the best fish to keep in a tropical fish tank.?

Question by Gengis: what are the best fish to keep in a tropical fish tank.?

Best answer:

Answer by BioGeek
Without more detail such as the size and nature of filtration, it will be hard to fully answer this question.

In general, you have many ways to go with a tropical tank.

You could go with a livebearer tank. This would be your guppies, mollies, swordtails, etc. These are colorful, and generally hardy fish that do well. They like a bit of aquarium salt added, and they are easy to breed and give birth to live young.

You could go with a community tank. This is a general term, but often a community tank has a variety of species, liek Tetras, bottom dwellers like catfish, and others. It can be very diverse, but you need to plan for how large the fish actually will get. For example, some fish like the tin foil babrb are sold small but can get over 8 inches long.

You could focus and have a habitat tank or a species tank. For example, a tank dedicated to African cichlids, or a tank dedicated to Discus or Angelfish.

I suggest you check out your local library and look for some ‘aquarium encyclopedias’ TFH (Tropical Fish hobbyist) published some good ones. Also check out websites like www.pethobbyist.com and www.aqualink.com for more details.

Q&A: Best ways to cycle a tank?

Question by Katelyn: Best ways to cycle a tank?
I am getting a large tank soon (100-150 liters) (27-40 gallons) And I know that I have to cycle it well before putting fish in it. I am new to having a large(ish) tank as I have only previously had a 20 litre (5 gallon) tank. I am not a beginner and know very well how to take care of fish I just want to know a good way to cycle a tank that size and for how long. I have some gravel and plants from a healthy tank that has been running for a while if that helps. I would also like to know if there are any hardy fish that I can put in there before it is cycled to help the process. It will be a tropical aquarium with a very small amount of aquarium salt.

Best answer:

Answer by Sora
Just cycle like any other tank. Put in the established/old media (gravel and other stuff from old tank) and let it cycle for 2 weeks or so to catch up on bacteria. It may take awhile longer if you don’t add a filter as a lot of the bacteria is in the filter. Fish food seems to be the best to add to a tank to cycle as people usually say don’t cycle with fishes and it’s cheap. Best to test your water as it helps a lot in knowing when it is done cycling. Good luck!

What would the best tropical freshwater predatory fish be to get for a 120 litre aquarium?

Question by Andrew: What would the best tropical freshwater predatory fish be to get for a 120 litre aquarium?
I am looking for something quite aggressive, like a species of puffer fish or one of the smaller species of piranha, but obviously my tank is not the biggest, so thats why I am wondering what kind of predatory fish would be suitable.
Are there any smaller predator fish that anyone could suggest?

What are the best tropical fish for a beginner?

Question by majpopo: What are the best tropical fish for a beginner?
I want to get a fish tank, complete with bottom feeders, snails, and tropical fish. Nothing overwelmingly large, but something easy to take care of. I don’t mind getting the filter or heater if I have to. What do you recommend? Fish wise and equipment wise?

Best answer:

Answer by webserfun
Go to the fish store.
Go to a store that specializes in just fish.
You will get the best advice and you can see what you are buying as well.
For instance, are you going salt water or fresh?
Big fish or small?
Fighters or Lovers?
Lots to think about.

Go to the fish store and find out! Who knows? you might end up with a 100 gallon tank and the coolest aquarium on the block!!!

Good luck!
