Information for Beginners on a Tropical Aquarium?

Question by Louise: Information for Beginners on a Tropical Aquarium?
I will be getting a 40 gallon fish tank soon and i want some beautiful fish in there.
I have kept goldfish before, but never tropical fish so i need some information about what to do such as:
What should the water temperature be?
What Tropical fish are compatible with each other? (I am looking for pretty, colorful fish)
What food would i need to feed my fish?
What decoration/ ornaments do tropical fish typically like?

I know that i will need:
A filter
A heater
A thermometer
A thing (i forgot the name) that makes bubbles for oxygen
Live plants
Ornaments
Dechlorinator
Gravel
And that thing (again i forgot the name bear with me!) that goes underneath the gravel that promotes plant growth
I need to cycle the tank for a week
And then get my fish!
What else do i need?
Thanks to those who answer.

You need to cycle the tank for longer tank a week. 4-6 weeks with a 40 gallon. Depending on the fish will tell you what temp you will need. Tropical is 72* and above. I feed all my fish blood worm’s and brine shrimp. Every tropical fish that I have had loves these. Everything from Angelfish to Guppies and Daino’s. Tropical fish decorations, I would recommend some kind of cave. Mine love ‘em.

Aquarium Sample Setup for Beginners (5 Gallon Fish Tank)

My 5 Gallon Fish Tank (Guppy,Guppy Babies,Zebra,Tetra Neon and Yellow Snail). Good for Beginners who want to start an aquarium, What you need : Tank – 3 Gallon to 10 gallon’s for beginners. Filter – Internal filters / Bottom filters are good at this stage. Heater – Depends on the place. If your leaving in a cool place then you might need to buy it. But if your in a room temp place then no need. Just make sure to monitor the temp of the tank. Thermometer – to monitor the temp of your tank. Good for temp between 22′C to 32′C max. Gravel – White or Red are good. Mixing it will bring good sight in your tank. Wood – (optional) little wood will be just fine. Aquatic plants – I recommend to atleast have 1 or 2 plant inside. Benifits of giving oxygen. Fish – for beginners its better to choose small fish, like Zebra,Guppy and Tetra fish as they can adjust easily on your tank temperature and dosent need much oxgyen (no need to add pump). You can add these 3 type of fish all of them in tank. Make sure to keep them pair to one another. Fish Food – Dont use other brands that are cheaper. Prefer TETRA MIN for better and healthier fish. If you do have questions please leave your comments.

Beginners guide to setup tropical fish tank

Everyone wants to make their room look beautiful. For that you can place one tropical fish tank in your room. It will be the focal point and all your guests will appreciate your taste. Many people feel that the setup of the fish tank is tough but that is not true. In the following article we are going to discuss a few simple steps to maintain a tropical fish tank in your room. This is an interesting thing and you surely will enjoy doing it.

When you are planning to buy an aquarium you must check the lighting in it. You can opt for smaller or bigger tank according to the size of the room. If the aquarium is bigger then it will be easy for you to maintain. However the equipments are a bit costly in case of bigger aquarium. To maintain an aquarium properly you need an aquarium of 12 inch width and height both. This is an ideal size that will fit into a smaller and bigger room both. Here you will get the space to keep multiple types of fishes. You need to buy aquarium with good quality filter to maintain is properly. You need sand, thermometer and heater so that you can maintain the temperature of the water. You also need to main the lights and temperature properly. For a 12 inch aquarium 150 watts are perfect. Light depends on the size of your aquarium and you need to be careful about it. If there is more or lesser light that required then the fishes will suffer badly. You definitely do not want that. You need to keep the light on for 8-9 hours a day. If you keep it on for more than that the water will get warmer and uncomfortable for the fishes.

It is very important to clean the aquarium frequently. However you need to be careful while washing it. Detergent cannot be used as it can harm the fishes and can even kill them. You need to use warm water and sponge. Other than that any thing can harm the fishes. You need to take care of them first. There needs to be a plug socket near the aquarium. You also need to place it far from any heat sources. Then you need to place the sand carefully at the bottom. After that the aquarium heater needs to be placed inside carefully. After that you need to pour water in it and then it is time on switch on the heater. This is important to keep that water temperature perfect for the fishes. Neon tetras, tiger barbs are fishes that you can easily keep. You can also keep gruppies. They look beautiful and lively inside the aquarium. You need not add more than 2-3 fishes at a time. If you put too many fishes at once then it can cause a trauma for them. It is important to keep the fishes happy. It will feel lovely to see these colorful creatures swimming freely inside the aquarium. Your room will get a lovely focal point for sure.

Tropical Fish – A Beginners Guide

Owning tropical fish can provide you with immense enjoyment and can become a wonderful hobby that not only you but other will benefit from also.

Although most tropical fish can be relatively easy to care for it is important to educate yourself before buying tropical fish because without proper understanding of their needs your new hobby could become extremely expensive.

You will need to know and research how to set up an aquarium, understand the size you will need for the amount of fish you are hoping to keep. Also be aware of the sizes your fish will grow to as most tropical fish are not purchased at adult size.

By reading books and looking on the internet you will be able to find out what temperature the water in your aquarium needs to be and will know how to test the ph levels, water hardness and for any toxins.

Be aware of diseases, one of the most common tropical fish diseases is white spot, this is caused by a parasite called ‘ick’ or ‘ich’ you will know if this has affected you tropical fish as you will notice white spots on the fishes scales. White spot is a very irritating disease for tropical fish, if you notice your fish rubbing themselves against objects or plants this could be a sign of infection.

It is important to treat white spot immediately. It can kill tropical fish within a few days and will be spread to others in the tank. If one of your fish has been affected you will need to treat the entire tank.

It is important to clean your fish tank and all the stones and plants that are in it, you will need to change the water checking the ph levels as you do so.

To prevent white spot from affecting your fish you should always quarantine new fish for approximately 2 days. Maintain a high water quality and always provide your fish with a balanced diet.

You should never over feed your tropical fish, this can pollute the water and also harm you fish. Provide enough food for them to survive and grow healthily. You may find that different fish will eat different food so it is worth researching this aspect. Some fish are scavengers and are happy to feed off scraps and debris from the tank others will need a specific type of food.

If you are beginner it may be tempting to rush out and buy the best tank you can see and add all the colourful fish you can find however, without being armed with the right information and the correct knowledge about owning tropical fish your efforts could result in disaster.

Your local pet shop owner or aquarium shops will be happy to talk to you about any information or concerns you have about setting up and keeping an aquarium. By knowing all the facts you will be able to purchase an aquarium and tropical fish that will be an enjoyment and pleasure to keep.

Allen Jesson writes for several sites including Pets, the aquarium site and salt water and fresh water aquariums

Beginners tropical fish?

Question by Marzipanic: Beginners tropical fish?
I have a 30L biorb fish tank that up until recently housed my two beloved goldfish. Sadly, the last one died last week and I’ve been given a tropical conversion kit by a friend, so I’m looking at getting some tropical fish rather than goldfish next time.

I’ve set the tank up with the heater and have set the thermostat to 26 degrees, and while I wait for the 7 days for the tank to settle, I’m a bit confused about which fish to buy.

The guy at the pet store said neons and danios only as they’re easiest to keep, but I’m not that keen on them.

Can anyone suggest some easy to look after “beginner” fish? And how many of them can I keep in a 30L tank?

Thanks!

Answer by Judi
That’s not a very big tank, which is probably why the guy at the pet shop suggested neons and danios. You could use the tank for a small blood parrot (my favorite) but you’d have to get a bigger tank eventually.

Livebearers like platys or swordtails are colorful and fun to watch, but if you try to save their babies (which they’ll have about once a month) it can drive you crazy. I wouldn’t keep more than two or three in an 8 gallon tank.
